A Day at Cabot Citrus Farms

This stretch of cold weather in the Northeast has me reminiscing about warmer days — specifically, a visit to Cabot Citrus Farms in Brooksville, Florida shortly after it opened last year.

Pulling into the property, you could tell the resort was still in its early stages. Construction was underway on The Roost and the new cottages.  However, even with work still happening around the edges, the property already felt special — and not like your typical Florida course.

We started the day at the driving range, which was fully equipped with Trackmans and included in the greens fees (nice touch). After loosening up there, we rolled a few putts on the putting course to get a feel for the undulating greens before our tee time.

Just before noon, we teed off on the Karoo Course, where the starter greeted us with their signature Cabot cookie. It’s a small gesture, yet a nice memory I haven’t forgotten.

Once we got out on the course, it became clear that Karoo is something different — fun, creative, and beautifully designed. The design invites you to think, offering multiple ways to play most holes. The greens are large and undulating, rewarding imagination but demanding precision. And the metal cups add that satisfying clink when a putt drops — a small but cool sensory detail that adds to the experience.

The on-course food and drink setup was equally impressive. You pass the comfort station multiple times during the round, and everything is convenient, well-stocked, and high-quality. While I didn’t stay for a full meal, it’s easy to see that Cabot put as much thought into hospitality as they did the golf.

We ended the day by kicking off our shoes and playing The Wedge, Cabot’s short course.  Before heading out, we made a quick stop in the pro shop to grab something to remember the day.

Overall, Cabot Citrus Farms lived up to the hype. It’s the kind of course that belongs on every golfer’s list — unique, beautifully executed, and a preview of something that’s only going to get better as the property matures. I can’t wait to go back and see how it evolves.
